The Petty Family SPARC³ Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mr. Larry K. Petty of Gastonia, president, Petty Machine Company, to provide financial assistance for recent graduates of Gaston or Lincoln County public schools, who have the desire to further their education as a participant in the Gaston College SPARC³ scholars program and is not based on need. The SPARC3 (STEM Persistence and Retention via Curriculum Centralized Cohorts) scholars program is designed to provide capable and motivated students the opportunity for intensive hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics instruction with laboratory experiences at the community college level which prepares them for successful completion of a four-year degree program.

The Petty Scholars for Gaston County Schools
Mr. Larry K. Petty of Gastonia, president, Petty Machine Company, is a 1954 graduate in mechanical engineering of NC State University. Mr. Petty has been a committed regional community leader in both business and civic endeavors. He is a strong believer that it takes a well-rounded education to create an informed and productive citizen and it is to this end that the Petty Scholars Scholarship hopes to encourage for students graduating from Gaston County Schools. The purpose of this annual scholarship award shall be to provide financial assistance for recent graduates of Gaston County public schools who have the desire to further their education beyond high school, but not necessarily the means. The Petty Scholars scholarship is designed to provide capable and motivated students the opportunity to gain a strong educational foundation at the community college level to prepare them for successful completion of a four-year degree program.
