Lynn Setzer
Ms. Lynn Setzer, representing the family of Mr. Charles Setzer
This fund has been established in memory of Mr. Charles “Sarge” Setzer. a native of Gaston County, Mr. Setzer joined the staff of Gaston College in the summer of 1964 after he retired from the United States Marine Corps. He is thought to be one of the first 10 hires made by Dr. Robert Benson, and due to his recent retirement from the USMC, the nickname “Sarge” quickly found him. His first job was to manage the snack bar, but he was quickly made manager of the college bookstore. As a veteran, he enrolled in night school and earned his AA degree. He later taught classes in small business management. Over time his responsibilities grew to include Veterans Affairs. He retired from Gaston College as the Director of the Student Center and had served on the planning team for Myers Center building. One of his proudest accomplishments on behalf of the college was moving the library books from the old library at the Old Methodist Church. With six students helping him and a rented Holsum Bread truck, Sarge moved each shelf of books without ever getting any of them out of order.
