The Family of Chris Coxton
Christopher (Chris) Lee Coxton was a young man who pursued excellence and knowledge. Helping others was uppermost in his mind, and in line with his faith and personality. He was born on December 28, 1961 in Richlands, Virginia. His parents were Dr. Benny Coxton and Judith Coxton Abernathy. He had two younger sisters, Cynthia Howes and Bethany Wootton.
Chris graduated from North Stanly High School in New London, NC where he played first trumpet in the marching and concert bands, while his sister Cindy played first flute. He was a student in good standing at NC State University majoring in law enforcement. At the time of his death he was serving a year local internship as a deputy with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD). He died from an accidental wound inflicted while cleaning his weapon on November 1, 1984.
Chris became dedicated to a career with the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) while attending NC State University. Chris’s choice of career was influenced by his respect and admiration of neighbor Mark Burpeau, an outstanding SBI agent.
Since one of SBI’s requirements was working in a local law enforcement agency for a year, Chris chose to prior to college graduation to work for the LCSD. While employed there, he further desired specific training in homicide, burglary, assault, drugs and other serious cases.
Working at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office became a special, rewarding time in his short life. Sheriff Barbara Pickens (then Deputy Chief) mentored him and said he was a wonderful young man with a bright future. Fellow officers were also teaching him as he got a real-life glimpse of his chosen profession. He was intimately involved in numerous endeavors by the Sheriff’s Office, which included undercover work in drug enforcement.
He always had a kind heart and a good sense of humor, including a ready smile, enthusiasm, and an outgoing personality. His character was above reproach. These characteristics combined to make him an outstanding law enforcement officer as attested by both his peers and superiors.
The untimely and tragic death of Christopher Lee Coxton cut short his plans, dreams and wishes for the future. However, his love of family, dedication to service, love of life, and optimistic nature will forever be remembered. Through this scholarship, his family and friends hope to love, remember and honor him forever, as well as help others who have integrity and life goals similar to his.
May God rest his soul as he remains in the palm of His hand.
