Johnny B Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of John “Johnny B” Barkley, for his 30 years of service as a volunteer announcer at WSGE. Barkley is an award-winning deejay from Lincolnton, North Carolina. He accepted his first radio job in 1981 when Mick Caskey asked him to co-host The Original Sea Cruise at 1050 AM WLON, Lincolnton, NC. He also began his mobile deejay business at that time. In 1988, he joined Beach 106.5 FM WRDX and co-hosted “Sea Cruise” with Beech Boys John & Mick on Sundays 8 am – 1 pm. In 1994, Johnny B joined WSGE as a volunteer announcer. In 2020 he was inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Awards Hall of Fame.This scholarship was established 2024 in his honor of his outstanding volunteerism. This scholarship is based on financial need and academic achievement. Student must be in the broadcast program and the Student must have volunteered 10 hours of their time to WSGE through an internship, work study, or general volunteer.
